This animated video tells the real story of the silent earthquake currently fracturing our food systems. Huge corporations are driving massive changes in agriculture, food processing and retail all over the world.
Giant finance and big tech companies are now joining agribusiness firms like Bayer, Corteva Agriscience, Syngenta Group and BASF to shape global food systems and increase their profits.
These include giant asset management companies that most people have barely heard of, such as Blackrock, who have been buying up shares in the world of food and agriculture and gaining enormous influence over their future development. But famous companies such as Amazon and Silicon Valley giants are also joining the party to strengthen their grip over the whole food chain.
The food system is full of things that can be turned into data for data giants to harvest – there’s DNA in the seeds, water and soil data on farms, data about moving commodities from field to factory to the dinner table, and of course, all the grocery sales and consumer data.
This 10 minute animated video explains how new ways of farming and selling food, based on digital technology and controlled by Wall Street’s corporations, are rapidly spreading and threatening localised food systems. Big Brother is coming to the farm but communities are fighting back with localised, biodiverse and agroecological food systems.
